Going for a solar energy based home is a very practical and profitable approach. However it is still not that popular to use due to the cost incurred in installing the solar panels system at home and the government regulations are also not very supportive. Now, let us see some of the basic solar energy facts which make the entire thing so special. It is the natural source of energy which will never face any scarcity ever. It is also one of the most powerful sources of energy.

Uses of Solar energy:

Solar energy is already used for free for doing many day to day tasks. Like drying clothes in the sun not only help in removing the moisture quickly but also help in the sterilization of the clothes. That is why especially kids’ clothes are dried in the sun to get rid of all the bacteria and other infectants. One can even use solar energy to cook food. It is widely used to heat the water and charge the calculators. It also lights up the entire planet. These are the solar energy facts.

Advantages of using Solar energy:

Solar energy also synthesises vitamin D in our body which helps in the synthesis of calcium. The various solar energy uses are becoming popular day by day. In economic terms, the demand for solar energy is more than its supply. A home based solar appliance has got certain solar panels in it which helps in the better absorption of the solar energy. A solar energy could be a constant source of energy. It could provide energy supply on a cloudy day and even in the nights. The current sources of energy are all non renewable ones. They are constantly depleting and may become extinct altogether one day. But, solar energy is the constant supply of energy. Solar energy helps in generation of fossil fuels. Everything revolves around solar energy. It is solar energy defines the cloud patterns, rain and heat. Due to solar energy the plants get power to manufacture their own food and in that process they release oxygen which is vital for life to exist on this planet. These are solar energy facts that make a huge difference to the world.

Leonardo da Vinci is one such person who anticipated solar industrialization way back in 1447. The recent statistics in a newspaper claim that currently about two billion people are living without access to basic facilities such as electricity. Americans are the ones who consume most of the electric power in the world. Though they account for about only five percent of the world’s population yet their electricity consumption amounts to about 26 percent of the world’s consumption.

One of the biggest oil providers, Shell, says that by 2040 about 50 percent of world’s total energy requirements will be met by renewable energies only. People will stop depending on the non renewable sources very soon. The biggest advantage of using solar energy is that it is the healthiest way of generating power on this planet with no pollutants or side effects noticed. All our day to day requirements will be easily fulfilled soon using solar energy. These solar energy facts must have surely influenced your opinion that this energy is out biggest hope to save us from the energy crisis.

What are solar panels?

A solar panel is a device that is designed to covert solar energy into another form of energy. Other forms of energy will include electrical energy, light energy as well as heat energy.

There are three main categories that the function of solar panels would fall into. Depending on the purpose on which the solar panels are geared toward, the function of such devices will vary.

Solar Panels That Generate Electricity

Solar panels are commonly used for generating electricity today. These solar panels are also dubbed as photovoltaic cells. The combination of photovoltaic cells will then form the photovoltaic module. Several photovoltaic modules are tied together with the use of a wire are then installed in a photovoltaic panel. The installation will include the several photovoltaic modules, a battery as well as an inverter. All of the things included in the installation are linked together with the use of a wire. With these structure and design, these solar panels are able to generate electricity for a building or a home.

Solar Panels That Generate Heat

For this type of panel, the heat of the sunlight is going to be collected. This type of panels are also called solar thermal collector. These are panel types that are specially designed to absorb sunlight and then provide heat. For this type of panel, the heat generated will then be ultimately converted into other forms of energy like electrical energy. Most solar power plants make use of this type of panel, the solar panels are used to generate heat water which will produce steam. A turbine that is connected to a generator will be used to drive to produce the electricity.

Solar Panels That Generate Heat Water in Homes

Solar hot water panels works by absorbing sunlight to heat a fluid. The heated fluid will then be transferred to a heat storage vessel. Residential homes with solar panels for generating heat water have flat absorbers on their roof tops. This type of absorbers is coated with dark selective surface that are able to covert radiation from the sun into heat. The heat that is produced by this process will be carried by the fluid that is in the tubes which are attached to the absorbers. The heat that was produced will be taken away to be used or stored for future use.

Solar Panel and Its Effect on the Environment

There are a lot of people nowadays who have been using solar panels for their homes as well as building establishments. Solar power plants are very helpful when it comes to producing electricity without destroying the environment unlike the use of fossil fuels to generate electricity. Basically, solar power plants are mainly utilized to exploit the great potential of solar energy. Solar energy is rampantly available and is rather a cheap source of energy. This is the reason why solar energy is good source of energy that people can use to generate electricity. The technology that revolves around solar cells are very helpful and effective for generating electricity. Use solar energy start from today and enjoy the benefit of it!

Are you wondering how much solar panels cost? Well, the cost depends on factors like the size and also the actual design of the overall system. You must also have understood that larger solar panels cost more as they need more material. In the same way, roof top solar panels cost more than the back yard ones. But at the end of the day, you can save a lot when you plan to do it yourself.

Let’s See How Much Do Solar Panels Cost

In most of the cases, solar panels cost nearly $100-200. Depending on the needs of your household electricity and the actual sales in your local hardware store, you can even build a diy solar panel for under $100. This is an example of the price list of the material, the prices may vary depend on the quality of your materials.

Untabbed Solar Cells 0.5v (36 ea) – Below $60.00

Plexiglass – $15.00 +-

Stainless Screw – $3.00+-

Wire – $2.00 +-

Wood – You may get it for free from scrap pile

Blocking diodes – Below $1.00

Solder – Below $3.00

Flux Paste – Below $1.00

Paint – Below $5.00

Silicone Sealant – Below $3.00

Total solar panels cost = $93.00 for a 18V Diy Solar Panel

This is just an estimation of how much do solar panels cost, the price stated might be slightly higher than the normal price but it’s still under $100. The price of some of the material is not reflecting the whole amount of the material, like the paint. We will only need some of it to paint our container, so the price is just an assumption of the amount we will be using. Again, the prices may be different as not everyone is selling them for the same price.

If you want to know about the time factor along with the solar panels cost, it will only take an average of 6 hours to properly build a solar panel but the solar panels will be working for you for years. This can be reduced if you work in a group of two or more. In comparison, the purchase of a new solar panel system is running around several thousand dollars. Though the government may offer discounts and incentives for solar energy use it is still very expensive. Even the solar panels cost in the wholesale market or the second hand store is also very expensive compared to building your own solar panels.

In terms of effectiveness, homemade solar panels can be as effective as a branded system purchased from a supplier online for a fraction of the cost. The cost of building a diy solar panel is easily offset by savings in electricity within one to three months. In comparison, it may take more than 10 years of use to offset the costs of buying solar panels.

In general, the project of “do it yourself” to convert your home to solar power usually takes no more than $200 for an average household. About 6-8 hours is required to purchase the materials, build the panel and install it. This can be done easily on a weekend and it is a great investment of time and money. It will pay for itself every month as the electricity costs come down. You also get the satisfaction of saving the environment, something that is priceless in itself. We all must wake up to the fact that this planet is burning and we are adding fuel to the fire by exhausting all the fossil fuels. The future generations are going to suffer because of us. This is the reason why we have to look for ways to use renewable energy.

Making a DIY solar panels is not as hard as you think. You can easily make a DIY solar panels at a very low cost. Not to worry, in this guide you will be learning how to make solar panels on your own and get it runs without time. By the way, here’s a guide that I used to make up this solar panels, you may consider to take a look at it, the “make solar panels for under $100” guide is bundled with videos which I found to be extremely useful for me in making solar panels.

Materials For DIY Solar Panels

Before you can start doing anything, you will need to prepare the materials first. So what do you need?

The core material : 36 solar cells (or more for spare use), wires, woods, stainless steel screw, uv protective clear panel cover(plexiglass/lexan/tempered glass), blocking diode

The other tools & materials : silicone caulk, caulk gun, solder, soldering gun, uv protective paint, paint brush, saw, screwdriver, knife(to cut the wire skin), protective eye wear, flux pen, flux paste, multimeter, gloves, drill, respirator, cotton cloth

Basically there are two types of solar cells available, pre-tabbed and un-tabbed. It’s better to use the pre-tabbed type as it will make your works a lot more easier but of course you have to pay more for it. The top image is the untabbed solar cells while the bottom one is the pretabbed solar cells.

You can get those materials and tools either from Amazon, eBay or local hardware store. Just do some research before you buy anything to ensure what you bought is suitable, durable and also, cheap. You may want to check out How Much Do Solar Panels Cost and also Solar Panel Material which will tell you where to get those materials online. Once you’ve got all the tool then it’s time to start making your own diy solar panels!

Start Making Your DIY Solar Panels

First, you have to test your newly bought solar cell, to know how much voltage it can generate. Normally, a 3″ x 6″ solar cell will generate about 0.5volts. You should test out each of your solar cells and see which is producing a higher volt and which is lower. It’s better for you to choose higher voltage solar cells to be used to make your solar panels as to produce more power. All the solar cells you bought may not producing the same voltage so you may need to test out all of them. The voltage that we are targeting is 18V which is made up of 36 cells with 0.5V each. However, you can just choose how much voltage you need as you like with the correct number of solar cells.

After that, determine which type solar panel layout you want and also calculate the width and height for the frame you are going to make later. There are two layout alternatives, either 4×9 or 3×12 which are 4 rows with 9 cells or 3 rows with 12 cells. You have to leave some space , a few centimeters will do, between the solar cells as they might expand when the sun heats them up. You will need to attach your solar cells later onto a substrate so be sure that the size is correct and you will not directly contact with your solar cell while putting it into your container at the later stage. The container is a wood board you have attached with four side wall to let your solar cells sit inside it. You must ensure that the substrate can fit into the container later.

Now, you know what’s the size of the frame you need already and you can start to make the frame now. Cut the wood pieces to the length you calculated just now for your container and substrate and cut the woods that are to be used as the side wall of your container. Then, attach the side wall to the container and make sure your substrate can fit into the container. Next, you may paint the woods with UV protective paint to help the solar panels to last longer. As the UV protective paint will help to keep the wood in lower temperate to prevent it from heating up your solar cells and resulted in a lower efficiency of your diy solar panels.

You must be wondering about this question: How do solar panels work? Well, let me explain. We all know the fact that there is immense power in the sunlight and we can feel its heat. Now, these solar panels use the heat of the sunlight and convert it into electricity which can be used for domestic purposes or any other purpose. Nowadays, the practice of using solar energy has gained momentum and popularity; lots of people have started waking up to the fact that it is better to use renewable sources of energy instead of finishing off the reserves of non renewable sources of energy.

How do solar panels work?

Solar panels are devices that generate electricity. The material used to build the panels is silicon. The panels are coated with silicone strips that are ideal for the transmission of electrons.

Pure silicon layers cannot generate power because to generate electricity, both positive and negative charges are necessary. Therefore, it combines with phosphorus to create a negative charge and in combination with boron, the positive charge is created. A sandwich of two plates with conductive wires installed inside the panels is placed. One of the solar energy particles known as photons help generate electricity by breaking down electrons. The electricity generated is used for various purposes such as lighting homes with electricity shortages and the functioning of solar water heaters and solar cookers, and other industrial and commercial purposes. These panels are now made of plastic and have become more affordable. So, how do solar panels work? They are placed on the top of roofs with access to direct sunlight. The power generated is stored in a battery and is used in times of need. They are also used to heat water in a pool or hot tub.

Watch this video to have a better understanding on how do solar panels work.

The main advantage of these panels is that they do not cause pollution, contamination, or acid rain. In other words, they can help stay “green” and they do not cause global warming. What’s more, since solar energy is a renewable resource, we do not have to worry about depleting reserves after establishing solar panels.

Solar Cells

Solar cells are profitable as they tend to last long and require very little maintenance. Once you have installed, you can reduce your energy bills significantly. To set up solar energy in your home, first understand how do solar panels work and then arrange for an installation. There are many varieties of commercially available panels, and you can take your pick based on your budget and needs. If you want to get yourself a kit then you can actually read the guide on how to make solar panels and find a supplier who can give you good discount on these solar panels. There are lots of them selling online and if you spend a few minutes online you will come across them. Now, did you understand the answer to the question: How do solar panels work? Okay! Let’s start learning how to make solar panels on your own now!

Let’s continue with the second part of making DIY Solar Panels. If you want to read the part 1 click “DIY Solar Panels” Part 1.

Container Of The Solar Cells Is Ready

After you’ve finished making your container, it’s now the part to get the solar cells wired. If you bought the pre-tabbed solar cells then you will only have to connect all the cells up by soldering them at the back. But if it’s un-tabbed,you will need to connect two tab ribbon to the two front electrodes by applying solder to the tab ribbon twice on each of the cells and have the tab ribbon to come off of the solar cells to attach to the back of the next cell in series. Then, also solder the remaining tab ribbon to the back electrode to have the connection done. Also, be sure to solder a little length of tab ribbon lead to the negative side of the first cell, so that the completed strings will have leads coming from both ends. Here’s something that you have to take note about, whenever you want to have your solar cells faced down, put it on a soft surface like cotton cloths. This is an important step that you can never forget.

Wiring Of Solar Cells Done

The wiring job of connecting the solar cells is now done, now, what you need to do is to determine the location of the solar cells that you are going to place on the substrate. Mark the location and you can start applying some silicone caulk onto the middle back of the solar cells. Then, attach the solar cells on the substrate and ensure the negative tab ribbon or the previous row is connecting to the positive tab ribbon of the next row.

When the glue has dried, you can now connecting all the solar cells string together by soldering the front and end of each row with another row of solar cells. Put the substrate into the wood container and screw it up. After that, connect the top starting cells and the bottom end together with another two wires one represents the negative and another one represents the positive. You might need to put a blocking diode at the positive wire there to prevent the back flow of power. Then, make a hole on the substrate and the container so that the two wires, which are the outflow of the power from the solar panels, can be pull out from the back of the container. Finishing this step means that the whole solar panel is done and you can start to generate power using it now.

Last Part Of Making The DIY Solar Panels

But right before that, you have to cover up the container to protect your solar panels. In this case, we are using a plexiglass which is cheaper than other material like lexan and tempered glass, both of them might be more expensive but they are better. However, to save cost, plexiglass is good enough to cover up the solar panels. Also, choose the cover of the container which is UV protective so that it will not get yellowing and affect the efficiency of your solar panel. Put on the cover and start screwing it to the container. You must make sure the screw hole on the plexiglass is slightly bigger than the exact size of the screw so that when it is heated up it has some space to expand. Failing to do that may cause the plexiglass cracking up when it is heated under the sun. Then the final step, ensure that there’s no hole between the cover and the container so no water will flow inside. You can cover up the hole with the silicone caulk and also not to forget there’s also a hole behind the container for the wires to come out. Remember to seal it up too. You’re done! There goes your diy solar panels.

Test Your DIY Solar Panels

You can start to test your diy solar panels under the sun and use it to generate electricity now. Congratulation!

Recently, I found another guide which provides really professional videos in helping you to make your solar panels. With the videos I personally believe that even without any diy experience, you can still make a diy solar panel on your own, as it’s really that detailed! I highly recommend you to take a look at the video, it’s better than the one that I’d mentioned previously. Click here.
